Valerie Matarese (ORCID: 0000-0003-2687-194X) is a former biomedical researcher who has been working for 20 years as an editor and editorial consultant in Italy. Born in New York, she studied at US universities and worked in research in the United States and Italy prior to launching a sole proprietorship offering editing, writing and training in scientific writing. She works mainly as an authors’ editor helping Italian biomedical researchers produce articles that are fit for purpose—peer review, publication, reading and replication. Valerie is actively engaged in promoting awareness of her profession. She served as editor of the multiauthor volume Supporting Research Writing: Roles and Challenges in Multilingual Settings (Chandos Elsevier 2013). In her book Editing Research: The Author Editing Approach to Providing Effective Support to Writers of Research Papers (Information Today 2016), she used qualitative and bibliographic research to document the work of authors’ editors in various disciplines and geolinguistic settings. Her most recent publication, co-authored with her colleague Karen Shashok (ORCID: 0000-0002-2506-1390), gives an authors’ editor’s view on “Post-publication peer review in biomedical journals: overcoming obstacles and disincentives to knowledge sharing.”
